What is a "Circle"?

United Methodist Women is an active organization at FUMC that involves women in study, reflection and  action.  Their wide variety of activities are centered in three areas of concern: mission, supportive community, and spiritual growth. Every first Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., women gather for inspiration and updating on happenings in these areas.  In addition, there are four smaller groups of women, called “Circles,” which also meet monthly, for study, learning and activities.  All women are welcome at both UMW monthly meetings, and at any Circle of their choice.

Currently, there are four Circles:

The Ruth Circle holds a monthly brown bag lunch every third Wednesday at noon.  Members often hear speakers who are versed on missions or spiritual growth.  They also share members’ concerns, and develop ways to participate in UMW  events.

The Tabitha Circle meets at the church in Room 202, at 1:30 p.m., every first Wednesday, following UMW general meetings.  Tabitha’s primary task is sewing, creating beautiful items that have been given in response to needs.  Recipients have included Hospice (quilts), Goose Hollow Family Shelter (pillowcases), and at present members are making baby blankets for distribution to needy locales around the globe, through UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief).

On the last Wednesday of every month, at 11:30 a.m., the Circle of Friends meets for lunch, either at the church, in a home, or at another designated location.  This Circle focuses primarily on mission in the community, and  plans frequent “field trips” to places such as NARAL, a nearby center which assists the Native American Community.

The newest Circle, added this past fall, has been named the Naomi Circle. This group was created for the convenience of  Terwilliger Plaza Retirement Community residents, so that they might easily participate in a monthly gathering.  Visitors are always welcome to join with these “women of wisdom,” as they share inspirational thoughts and timely book reviews, and enjoy fellowship with one another.  Many of the participants were active in UMW work and leadership, in churches which they attended before moving to Terwilliger Plaza. This Circle meets the fourth Thursday of the month at 2:00 p.m., usually in the Club Room at Terwilliger Plaza.
