Once again our hearts are aching as we hear of violence on a school campus – this one in nearby Troutdale, Oregon. As we each navigate the complex web of emotion, let us remember we are not alone in our fears or in our hopes. As Mahatma Gandhi said, early in the 20th century:
“When I despair, I remember that all through history
The ways of truth and love have always won.”
Let us pray:
O Gracious God of Truth and Love,
Once more we are shocked and stunned by senseless violence.
Once more we want to gather our children into our arms, as we long for some assurance that the world is safe, that there is joy even in the midst of great sadness, hope even in our moments of despair.
Comfort us, God. Sustain us with your presence. Remind us of the victory of Truth and Love which you inspire in every moment.
Help us to be among those who speak the truth and who share your love.
Help us to care for the victims, to ease the fears of our children and to come together as ambassadors of peace for our families, our community, our world.
Keep us from falling into despair. Mobilize us with your hope, to stop the violence and to heal us all.
In the name of the One who taught peace and calls us even today to live in peace…
In the name of Jesus, the Prince of Peace, we pray. Amen.
