Land & Housing Circle

Update: October 18, 2023

Hi Church Family,

Kitchen tables of Land and Housing Circle members are buzzing with all the great work that is happening related to FUMC’s mission through housing. Here’s an update on all that’s stirring right now:

THIS SUNDAY: Brandi Tuck from Path Home

On October 22 at 12:00pm in the Fireside room, hear from Brandi Tuck, Executive Director of Path Home – formerly the Goose Hollow Family Shelter housed in our very own church gym. You will gain insights to Portland’s housing crisis and what we can do to ensure our neighbors have a place to call home.

UPCOMING: Forum with Laura Moulton of Street Books

On November 5 at 12:00pm in the Fireside room, hear from Laura Moulton, Executive Director, and Street Librarian at Street Books. Lauren founded Street Books in 2011, a bicycle-powered, mobile library, serving people who live outside in Portland, Oregon. This forum is sponsored in conjunction with the First Church Library.

VOLUNTEER at Path Home

Are you ready to see Path Home’s awesome work in person? On Saturday, November 18 from 9:30am to 12:00pm, a group from FUMC will be headed to Path Home to help clean and maintain their beautiful spaces. We’ll be learning more about their work and about ongoing opportunities to support the shelter.

What’s new with the Land & Housing Circle?

All our welcome at the Land and Housing Circle’s monthly meetings every third Monday of the month (due to Thanksgiving, our next meeting is Monday, December 11 at 6:30pm). We continue to explore what we (and our property) can do to ensure our neighbors have safe, reliable housing. And there are new opportunities for you to get involved in subcommittees working on housing education, building community, and understanding finance and legal aspects of housing.

To join us, email dianawhite101@gmail.com.

United Methodist Greater NW Area Housing Summit

On November 4, a summit hosted by the Greater NW Area Conference will feature presenters and workshops on ways ministry settings can be involved in affordable housing within their communities. Led by Bishop Cedrick Bridgeforth, the event will offer practical tools and tips for diving deeper into this work.
