Our Creation

Care Committee

Planet Church is Portland FUMC’s creation care committee, and for many years has focused on how we as a church community can provide healing and renewal to our precious earth through climate justice advocacy. 

It is part small group, part study group, and is the place through which new initiatives for climate justice and creation care emerge. To get involved, contact committee chair Martha Connell.  

Fundraising     

  • The primary source of funding for Planet Church’s projects is the Bottle Drop program. The State of Oregon collects cans & bottles and provides 10 cent deposits back. Congregants are invited to pick up a blue recycle bag at church, on which is a sticker with a special code that allows your bag of bottles to benefit the church. Simply fill the bag up with qualified cans and bottles, take them to a drop off site, and then our church Bottle Drop account gets the proceeds! 

  • Keep an eye on the calendar for upcoming Styrofoam recycling events after church in Collins Hall. Please save all your dense Styrofoam and #6 plastics. The Planet Church folks collect them and take them to a special location for recycling. For more information, contact Gail Douglas.

Projects & Events

  • Our Planet Church committee participates in Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon’s Oregon Interfaith Earth Summit. During the event, faith communities across Oregon watch a plenary session together on Zoom, followed by local hosts facilitating in-person sessions focusing on relationship-building and learning with people of faith in their region. 

  • Oregonians can support our state’s transition to solar power through the Oregon Community Solar Program. This program gives both renters and homeowners the opportunity to support local solar projects while saving money on your existing utility bill, even if they are unable to install rooftop solar panels at home. Everyone who enrolls save 4% on their subscribed energy, and those identified as low-moderate income save 32% on the energy produced by their share of the solar farm.
