Library Donation to Portland Literacy Council
Diana Sellers, Nadine Schechtman and Mary Gentry presented a check from the proceeds of the FUMC library book sale to Cheryl Thoen, board president of the Portland Literacy Council.
Thank you for all of your book donations and cash contributions to the FUMC library book sale that was held in October. Because of your generosity, the Library was able to present a check for $500 to the Portland Literacy Council. Cheryl Thoen, board president, was extremely appreciative, and said it would go a long way to help with the expense of their annual tutor training.
The Portland Literacy Council (PLC) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1993. Since their founding, the focus of the Portland Literacy Council has been promoting adult literacy in Oregon. They provide training, resources and placement of volunteer tutors who serve in free or low-cost programs for adult learners. Volunteer programs are online and in person for teaching adult basic skills, adults seeking to complete a GED®, learning English as a second language and studying for the citizenship test.
The PLC also hosts an annual literacy tutor conference, publishes the LiteracyLINKS newsletter, and partners with other literacy programs in our region.
